Hi, I’m Shar Simpson. Welcome to my site!

I’m a narrative designer working across interactive, immersive, and participatory experiences, from early concept to fully realized, playable worlds. I create stories you don’t just watch, but enter.

My practice sits between design and performance. I build and develop narrative systems and participatory stories, from early conceptual phases to full playable, inhabitable spaces. When it serves the work, i often step inside the worlds as a guide, presenter, character, or something less defined. I’m interested in how presence, or the absence of it, shapes experience.

Rooted in co-creation, worldbuilding, and storytelling psychology, my work explores how participation can transform narrative. I often use AI, blockchain, and everyday platforms in unexpected ways to build accessible, participatory systems.

My background ranges from extreme immersive haunts to luxury department stores. I’ve created interactive ghost stories with Alexa, AR-powered educational experiences, and pediatric healing experience using puppetry, all designed to support, demystify, and empower. I’m drawn to spaces between the possible and impossible, where audiences don’t just engage, but shape the story.

My projects have appeared at Tribeca, CPH:DOX, Slamdance, Mozilla Fest, SITGES, Cannes XR, and more.

I authored the first Choose Your Own Adventure graphic novel and continue to design systems that invite play, agency, and unpredictability. I teach interactive storytelling and worldbuilding at Columbia University and the School of Visual Arts, focusing on process, experimentation, and collaboration.

I also run Thing Lab, a studio focused on collaboration between humans and machines, specializing in worldbuilding and interactive storytelling. Past collaborators include Meow Wolf, Red Bull, and Yale University.

I hold dual MFAs in Creative Writing and Interactive Media for Performance from CalArts, and I am a Sundance Storytelling Lab Fellow, a resident of POV Spark Lab, and a member of the Columbia University Digital Storytelling Lab.
